Dear Diary,
Coach Effran was the first coach who ever put up with my shit and helped me with my problems. He was a wrestling coach and he saw that I had potential. He helped me channel all my anger that I had about my dad going to jail into a skilled wrestler. He made me feel unique or special by pushing me after and out of practice. I’ve never stood out as being better or more of a priority to anyone but he helped me feel that way.
A day I got hurt at an Arroyo duel he took me to the side and talked to me. The captain of Arroyo cross faced me and gave me a black eye. I was so angry and tried to fight this kid but he helped me calm down and gave me a good way to look at it. He told me “you should be proud of that shiner, that guy was scared to lose to you so he resorted to a dirty move”. All my anger then turned into pride and I felt like I was the best wrestler that day. To this day I still feel like I let down Coach Effran by quitting wrestling but he still treats me like a son and we have a very subtle but symbolic relationship.
